Watermark

Watermark as a Security Feature

Traditionally, a watermark is incorporated into the paper during production. The paper is made thinner in specific areas, creating light and dark patterns that become visible when held up to the light. This process typically requires large print runs and specialized paper manufacturing.

Chemical Watermark as an Alternative

However, there’s a clever and efficient way to achieve the same effect: using special ink. Instead of embedding the watermark in the paper, we print a chemical watermark on the paper — usually on the reverse side — using offset printing. When held up to the light, the illusion of a real watermark appears.

This technique allows for great design flexibility: the watermark can be a logo, text, or pattern. We’re happy to advise you on readability and how the effect interacts with different paper types.

A key advantage is that this type of watermark cannot be copied, making it an effective security feature against counterfeiting.

Advantages of a Chemical Watermark:

  • Suitable for small print runs
  • Most effective on paper up to 200 gsm
  • Commonly used for stationery, certificates, and diplomas

Additional Security Options:
For enhanced document security, this technique can be combined with:

  • UV-sensitive paper
  • Thermographic printing
  • Embossing
  • (Holographic) foil
  • UV ink
