Thermo printing

Thermoprint isalso known as paramount or embossing. It is one of our techniques that deserves a bit more attention. It offers unique possibilities as well as some limitations or challenges.

Raised tactile imprint

Thermoprint is applied on our GTO printing press. The freshly printed sheet is coated with a resin powder that adheres to the still-wet ink. The powder is then removed from the unprinted areas for reuse. The sheet is immediately transported through an oven where the transparent powder swells from the heat, matching the color of the printed ink. It is also possible to apply resin powder with glitter or in a specific (neon) color. The print appears raised on the paper.

Thermoprint is suitable for fine drawings, logos, and text. Multiple colors of resin powder can be applied in the same pass.

(Im)possibilities of thermoprint

Many creative possibilities, but also some challenges-though solutions are often found. We’re happy to advise you.

  • Due to the heating process, not all types of paper are suitable, and sizes larger than A4 are not recommended (for letterhead, a laser-compatible type can be supplied).
  • Small formats can also be challenging because of trimming (and flattening) the thermoprint.
  • Application on window envelopes, machine-coated paper, glued paper, and tracing paper is unfortunately not possible.
  • Large areas often develop a so-called ‘orange peel’ texture.

Advice or quote?

Specialty printing company Douma stands for customization, craftsmanship and exclusivity in print. We are happy to provide you with a price quote, so you won't face any surprises later. With techniques such as foil printing and embossing, a unique die is made for each design, which is a precise and time-consuming process. Our prices therefore start from approximately €500 per assignment, even for small print runs.
